The Issue

Many of us label Old Year's Night as a moment of joy, happiness and celebration but for our beloved pets and animals, it turns into a nightmare due to the unrestricted use of fireworks. This issue is profoundly personal to us as we have witnessed animals physically harming themselves out of fear and stress caused by the startling sounds of fireworks.

Dogs, cats, birds, and other animals have movements, and noises they don't understand can lead them to extreme measures, such as running away from home, damaging property, and even self-harm. Studies show that the loud cracking sounds of fireworks are far beyond the comfortable hearing range of many animals, which triggers alarm responses and stress (American Veterinary Society).

In Trinidad and Tobago, there are no specific laws regulating the use of fireworks which magnifies the problem. We demand that the authorities create and implement stricter rules that regulate the use of fireworks, especially during holiday seasons like Old Year's Night. Actions such as designated areas or specific times would significantly reduce the harm and discomfort caused to our beloved animals.

We can't keep our eyes closed to the anguish of our innocent animals. It's high time we raise our voices for those who can't express their fear and pain in words. Let's make Trinidad and Tobago a safer place for our companions by regulating fireworks. Please sign this petition and let us stand in solidarity with our animals.
