I live in El Paso, a city where approximately 13% of residents are senior citizens, a group often targeted by unethical solar panel dealers. Promised zero electricity bills, these citizens are deceived into paying both a soaring electric bill and a solar panel bill. As the cost of electricity continues to rise exponentially alongside the burden of solar panel loan payments, our senior citizens are being submerged in bills beyond their ability to pay.

Since the acquisition of El Paso Electric by JP Morgan, rates have seen unjustifiably drastic increases. There appears to be little competition within our city's energy sector, resulting in an environment enabling such hikes. Not only are we seeing these unreasonable increases in the cost of electricity, but the solar panel industry also operates with scant regulation, lending to deceptive practices that take advantage of our most vulnerable neighbors.

To mitigate the spiraling energy costs, our city urgently needs to impose regulations on El Paso Electric Company hikes, allow for increased competition within the sector, and place a cap on yearly rising rates. Furthermore, the solar panel industry in El Paso requires stricter regulation to prevent further exploitation and deception of residents.
