Regulate conduct of livestream sellers on social media
The Issue
Recently, I witnessed an alarming incident involving popular TikTok sellers, Winnie Heng and Vadalene Eng, in the TikTok Vedawinfam, who shocked me and many others by cursing and threatening buyers simply because they cancelled their orders. This kind of unprofessional and aggressive behaviour from livestream sellers is unacceptable and needs to be addressed urgently.
Livestream selling has become an increasingly popular method for conducting business, bridging buyers and sellers in a dynamic and immediate way. However, the virtual space should not be a free pass for any form of abuse or intimidation. When sellers resort to threatening language or aggressive behaviour, it not only violates the trust of the consumer but also diminishes the integrity of e-commerce platforms.
Currently, there is a lack of stringent guidelines and consequences for such behaviour, leaving customers vulnerable to intimidation. According to a survey conducted by the Pew Research Center, over 41% of Americans have experienced online harassment, highlighting the need for stronger protective measures in all online interactions, including commercial exchanges.
To ensure a safe and respectful environment for everyone involved, I urge social media platforms like TikTok to implement clear conduct policies for livestream sellers. These policies should include:
1. **Strict Guidelines**: Define unacceptable behaviour such as threats, cursing, and any form of verbal abuse.
2. **Reporting Mechanism**: Develop an efficient and accessible system for buyers to report sellers who engage in intimidating conduct.
3. **Penalties for Misconduct**: Enforce consequences for sellers who violate these guidelines, including temporary or permanent bans from the platform.
4. **Training and Support**: Offer training sessions for sellers on maintaining professionalism and respectful communication during livestreams.
Taking these steps will protect consumers, foster a positive commercial environment, and enhance the reputation of the platform. Let's ensure that the exciting world of livestream selling is safe and respectful for both buyers and sellers alike.
Please join me in calling on social media platforms to establish and enforce these necessary guidelines by signing this petition. Your signature is a step towards creating a safer and more respectful online community for everyone.
