The Issue

Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Lawmakers,

Artificial intelligence data centers are rapidly appearing across Chicago, promising significant economic benefits. However, as students, residents, and concerned community members, we must address the critical environmental impact of these facilities when left unchecked. AI data centers consume massive amounts of electricity, straining our energy grids and increasing greenhouse gas emissions. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, data centers account for about 2% of the total electricity use in the United States, a number expected to increase with the advent of AI technologies.

These centers also pose a challenge to local water resources. Cooling these facilities requires substantial water use, exacerbating Chicago's existing water supply issues. As reported by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, water resources are under increasing demand, and unsustainable use can have dire long-term consequences for our community.

Moreover, AI data centers contribute to the growing problem of electronic waste. The International Telecommunication Union states that nearly 53.6 million metric tons of e-waste are generated annually worldwide. Without proper regulation, the disposal of outdated equipment and hardware adds to local landfills' burden and increases environmental pollution.

In light of these challenges, it is imperative that we implement strict regulatory measures. We propose that Chicago city officials and Illinois lawmakers:

1. Establish energy efficiency standards for all existing and new data centers to minimize electricity consumption.
2. Implement water management guidelines to ensure the sustainable use of water resources.
3. Enforce robust e-waste recycling and disposal practices, ensuring that electronic waste from AI data centers is processed in an environmentally responsible manner.

By taking these steps, Chicago can become a leader in sustainable technology integration, balancing economic growth with environmental stewardship. We call on Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois lawmakers to create a framework that regulates the development and operation of AI data centers to protect our community's future.

Please sign this petition to urge immediate action for sustainable AI data center practices in Chicago. Together, we can ensure a healthier, more sustainable future for all residents.
