The VOTE

The issue: developers going wild downtown.
City Council is scheduled to vote on a proposal to increase building heights downtown up to 45 ft or 65 feet (6 stories) depending on the area.

At first blush this does not seem like a catastrophic issue. It is …because increasing building heights is just one of many changes slated for downtown.

When buildings along Main St. are able to go from one story up to 3 or 4, the number of new businesses, patrons and parking spaces needed will increase dramatically.

Traffic congestion will become even worse. Really.

Businesses will go out of business for lack of close-in parking.
Parking will be pushed into residential areas.

The backlot area, north of Main St., may see apartment heights up to 65 ft (6 stories).

Roughly 350 public parking spaces may be converted to private and access to the lake for large community events may be greatly restricted.
The city claims to have parking alternatives in the works, but nothing is definite. Results of the parking study have not been finalized.

Increasing the building heights downtown must be stopped until the City can develop and present a comprehensive plan for downtown.
