Rebecca McKay started this petition to Region of Waterloo

The Region of Waterloo is rapidly becoming a transit focused area. With the introduction of Light-Rail and other rapid transit options, the Region is looking to get people out of their cars and onto public transit. We are also in a dog friendly city. Many companies allow dogs in the workplace and more retailers are becoming pet friendly.

However, it currently stands that only small dogs in carriers are permitted on the Grand River Transit system (and service animals). Other major transit systems are allowing dogs on public transit (TTC, GOTransit).

To be able to have a dog in Waterloo Region, you must have access to a car. In the climate emergency era, with the Region pushing for green transit, this is not an effective way of maintaining that mandate. Allowing dogs and other pets on transit would allow people greater ease to relinquish their vehicles and go for a green transit option. Owning a pet is also prohibitive to those in certain socio-economic circumstances, or those unable to drive due to a disability or medical condition. The other option is very expensive cab rides, which is also not environmentally friendly or economically sustainable.
