Central Hill
As the crane stands motionless in the skyline over Central Hill, work continues below on the 31 flats on site of Truslove House, former nurses' and homeless hostel.
The £14m, part of a loan to Lambeth from central Govt at a cost of £500,000 interest pa, could have been better spent retrofitting approx. 200 homes on the estate, with new kitchens, and all. This would have solved fuel poverty and helped to tackle homelessness by filling more empty homes than the 22 council-level and 9 shared-ownership in the new build. Instead of sharing the debt across only 31 households, it would have been 200, and in a far better position to actually pay it off.
The new build is set to be finished in mid-end of 2024.
Gnomes of Lambeth
As Homes for Lambeth pales into the sunset following mismanagement and a damning report by Lord Kerslake, the Gnomes for Lambeth are coming together on 8th July to walk from Central Hill, SE19 to South Lambeth Estate, near Oval. We'll be setting out at 10.30 from Central Hill (meet 10am), then stopping off at Cressingham Gardens, 12pm, and Windrush Square, 1pm - 1.30pm to arrive in the South Lambeth Estate at 2.30, where there'll be talks and activities.
Come and join us. Meet: behind the shop on Central Hill, SE19 1AA.
