Reform YouTube's Unjust Policies on Copyright/Community Guidelines

The Issue

As a dedicated music mashup creator on YouTube, I have experienced firsthand the stifling effects of the platform's policies regarding copyright strikes, content ID flags, age restrictions, and community guidelines takedowns. These policies, while reasonable in some areas, are often unclear to many users and, as a result, limit the creative freedom of creators like myself who rely heavily on source material for our work.

These policies are not only unfair, but also inconsistent in their application - in addition to these unfair policies, YouTube has a history of removing channels that do not violate community guidelines while failing to take action against those that do. This selective enforcement is detrimental to both creators and audiences alike who depend on this platform for entertainment or information.

According to a study by Lumen Database in 2017, over 2 million URL removal requests were submitted to Google due to alleged copyright infringement (Lumen Database). Yet many of these requests were found to be invalid or misused (Electronic Frontier Foundation), highlighting the need for reform in how YouTube handles such issues.

We call upon YouTube to review and reform its policies concerning copyright strikes, content ID flags, age restrictions, and community guidelines takedowns. We urge them not only to consider fairness, but also consistency in their enforcement. This will ensure that all creators are given an equal opportunity to express their creativity without fear of unjust repercussions.

Sign this petition if you believe in fair treatment for all creators on YouTube!
