About two years ago, you signed this petition because you believed that our traditional marriage practices should preserve our culture—not become financial barriers that keep young people from marrying or place unnecessary burdens on families.
Your support did more than raise awareness. It gave birth to a movement.
Today, we are proud to share that the Advocacy For Family Rites Reforms Initiatives (AFFRRI)—an organisation inspired by this very petition—is now a registered non-governmental organisation (NGO) in Nigeria, committed to promoting fair traditional marriage practices, strengthening families, empowering young people, supporting vulnerable girls, and preserving the positive values of our culture.
This achievement belongs to every one of you who believed change was possible.
Your Voices Are Being Heard
Since becoming a registered NGO, AFFRRI has engaged communities, traditional institutions, faith leaders, policymakers, young people and development partners to advocate for reforms that protect our culture while making marriage more accessible and affordable.
One of our most significant milestones was our official engagement with His Royal Majesty Edidem Sylvanus Effiong Okon, Paramount Ruler of Uyo, who publicly endorsed our advocacy and described it as "a welcome development." During our meeting, His Royal Majesty revealed that the Traditional Rulers Council had previously developed proposals aimed at reducing excessive marriage demands and had forwarded them for legislative consideration years ago. Shortly after receiving endorsement by the Paramount ruler, the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly unanimously adopted a motion calling for the review and standardisation of bride prices and traditional marriage requirements across communities in the state. The House also called for stakeholder consultations, collaboration with traditional institutions, and public awareness campaigns. This is encouraging progress. See details here
But our journey is not over.
A motion alone does not create enforceable protections. Families and young couples need comprehensive legislation that preserves our rich cultural heritage while preventing exploitative and excessive marriage demands.
That is why AFFRRI is now entering the next phase of this campaign.

Our goal is to build broad public consensus that will support the development of a fair, culturally respectful law on traditional marriage practices.
Real reform must be shaped by the people it will serve.
Expanding Our Impact Through the Donate-A-Pad Campaign
As we listened to communities, another challenge repeatedly emerged.
Many girls in secondary schools miss classes because they cannot afford basic menstrual products. Poverty continues to affect their education, dignity, confidence, and future opportunities.
This inspired AFFRRI to expand our work through the Donate-A-Pad Campaign, which supports vulnerable girls by providing menstrual hygiene products, menstrual health education, and community awareness.
Our vision is simple:
Stronger families begin with empowered girls and fair cultural practices.
These two campaigns complement one another because both seek to remove barriers that prevent young people from reaching their full potential.
Encouraging Young Voices
To ensure the next generation helps shape the future, AFFRRI has also introduced a statewide essay initiative for secondary school students on the theme:
"Traditional Marriage Rites and Fairness: What Needs to Change?"
We believe young people deserve a voice in conversations that will shape the families and communities they will one day build.
Their ideas, experiences, and perspectives will help inform future advocacy and policy recommendations.
