Reform the UK Criminal Justice System for Fairer Sentencing

Reform the UK Criminal Justice System for Fairer Sentencing
The Issue
As a resident of Nottingham, I am deeply disturbed by the recent incident where a man with mental health issues brutally stabbed three people in our city. The fact that he is now living comfortably in a hospital, receiving three meals a day and pocket money from our benefits system which will be a substantial amount saved up if ever released, this is not justice - it's an affront to the victims and their families. It is appropriately £350k a year to look after him. This case has highlighted serious flaws in our criminal justice system and how a man can murder three beautiful innocent people and claim diminished responsibility, a lesser charge of murder to manslaughter, I don’t get it, this needs immediate attention.
The current state of affairs is unacceptable. According to statistics from the Ministry of Justice (2019), there were 17,364 offenders found guilty but not sentenced to immediate custody. This includes individuals who have committed serious crimes like murder and assault but are instead placed in hospitals or given suspended sentences.
We need reform that ensures fair sentencing for all criminals regardless of their mental health status. We must ensure that those who commit violent crimes face appropriate consequences while also receiving necessary treatment for their mental health conditions.
This petition calls on lawmakers to review sentencing guidelines and consider reforms that balance punishment with rehabilitation more effectively. It's time we stood up as a community and said enough is enough! Please sign this petition if you believe in fair justice for all citizens.
