Reform the Treatment of Sexual Assault Victims Within the Criminal Justice System

The Issue

In 2021, a young girl, underage and vulnerable fell prey to a man who feigned to be a taxi driver. In his vehicle, she encountered a horrifying experience, as this man sexually assaulted her and attempted to rape her. Even though she miraculously managed to escape and the offender was caught with ample evidence to ensure conviction, the wheels of justice seem to be turning painfully slow. The trial, initially planned for January 2025 in crown court, has now been pushed back to 2026. This means the victim will have had an agonizing wait for five long years since the crime occurred.

Our criminal justice system is not serving its purpose if it allows the victims of these heinous crimes to undergo such stress and delay. According to the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN), only 230 out of every 1,000 sexual assaults are reported to police, only 46 reports lead to arrest, and mere 5 cases lead to a conviction. These statistics paint a dire picture of a system that is failing its duty at every step.

The treatment of sexual assault victims requires urgent review. We ask for a system that respects their pain, treats them with dignity, and justly punishes the offenders. Transparency, expedited procedures, and improved survivor support services are crucial changes we must demand.
