According to the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO), more than 50% of the poor in India belong not only to recognised backward communities but also to sections traditionally considered upper caste. This stark statistic highlights the need for a paradigm shift in how government support systems are structured.

The goal should be the creation of a socially equitable policy framework that bases reservations on economic status rather than caste, ensuring that assistance reaches those who genuinely need it. Implementing a new system that considers the income levels and living conditions of individuals would more accurately reflect the current societal structure and needs.
