Reform the House Sales Legislation in England

The Issue

My daughter and her husband experienced firsthand the heartbreaking ordeal of losing their hard-earned money through collapsed chains in the process of buying a house. Not once, but seven times!  This unfortunate reality confronts thousands of prospective homeowners annually in the United Kingdom.

According to the HomeOwners Alliance, a critical adversity within the English housing market is the notorious issue of property chains collapsing, leading to a distressing 300,000 broken deals each year (HomeOwners Alliance, 2019). This often leaves prospective homeowners, like my daughter and her husband, with no money to pay for any more searches, etc. The prevalent pain this issue imparts clearly indicates a system in need of reform.

Moreover, there are solutions available to us that other countries have enforced. For instance, Denmark implemented laws where buyers are subject to a penalty if they withdraw from a sale, leading to less than 2% of agreed sales falling through (Compare My Move, 2019). It's time England took heed of successful strategies like this and reconsidered its laws on house sales. The process in Scotland is also much more streamlined, with a much lower rate of drop out.

In light of these damaging figures and proven alternatives, we urge the UK government to reform the house sales legislation. This action will shield future homeowners from unnecessary hardship and foster a more secure, fair, and reliable housing market for all. Please, sign this petition to safeguard the dream of homeownership from being a costly nightmare.
