The Issue

I am a concerned parent who diligently pays child support, but have become frustrated with how these payments are being managed, with the mother not using them directly for my child's benefits. Child support funds should not be misallocated or mishandled, and there needs to be a system that ensures transparency and accountability in its usage.

One major concern is the inability to claim my child on taxes despite paying taxes on the support money. While I am taxed on these payments, the recipient isn't required to claim them as income. This discrepancy places an unfair financial burden on the paying parent. A fair solution would be to exempt child support payments from being taxed for the payor, while requiring the recipient to declare these funds as income to the IRS.

Another pressing issue is the inclusion of household and car payments when calculating child support. It is unfair for these expenses to be considered, as they are costs the recipient would likely bear regardless of the child's living situation. Child support should focus solely on the direct financial needs of the child.

We urgently need reforms that demand financial accountability and transparency. Requiring recipients to provide a detailed monthly breakdown of how the child support funds are spent would ensure that the money goes directly towards the child's welfare and not other unrelated expenses.

Legislative reform in Texas could pave the way for a fairer child support system that truly prioritizes the wellbeing of children, while ensuring tax equity and financial accountability for all parties involved. Please sign this petition to urge Texas lawmakers to review and reform the current child support laws, making them fair and just for everyone concerned.
