Reform Tennessee Law to Recognize Animals as Living Property

Reform Tennessee Law to Recognize Animals as Living Property
The Issue
I am a resident of Tennessee, and like many others, I believe that all living, breathing animals should have rights to protect them. Currently, our state law views animals as owned property. This classification fails to acknowledge the sentient nature of these beings and their capacity for emotions and pain.
In 2015, the FBI started categorizing animal cruelty as a Class A felony due to its serious implications (FBI National Incident-Based Reporting System). Despite this recognition at a federal level, our state laws lag behind in providing adequate protection for animals.
We are not alone in this fight for change. In France since 2015, animals have been legally recognized as "living beings gifted with sensitivity" rather than mere property (French Civil Code). It's time for Tennessee to follow suit.
By reclassifying animals from owned property to living property under law, we can ensure they receive the respect and protection they deserve. This is not just about changing legal terminology; it's about recognizing their inherent value beyond ownership.
Let us come together and urge our lawmakers in Tennessee to reform these outdated laws. Sign this petition today because every life deserves respect and protection - human or animal.
