The Issue

For over a decade, I've had the privilege of working as a pedicab operator in the bustling iDrive district of Orange County, Florida. This area, renowned for its vibrant attractions and lively atmosphere, has offered countless opportunities for pedicab operators like myself to transport visitors and support the local economy. However, the current regulations surrounding pedicabs are making it increasingly difficult for us to sustainably earn a living. Specifically, the restriction on the use of pedal-assist technology is a major barrier that affects our efficiency and capacity to serve customers effectively.

Pedal-assist technology, a feature that enhances the cyclist's pedaling ability with a small motor, could drastically improve our operations by making rides smoother, especially on inclines, and reducing physical strain, thus allowing us to cater to more passengers throughout the day. Despite these clear advantages, current regulations in Orange County restrict the use of this technology, thereby limiting our potential and, by extension, the economic vitality we bring to this district.

Across the world, cities embracing modern mobility solutions have recognized the benefits of pedal-assist technology. Cities like San Francisco and New York have successfully integrated pedal-assist in their bike-share and taxi programs, leading to increased service efficiency and operator satisfaction while meeting critical public safety standards. Orange County should look to these successful models as a guide to modernizing our own pedicab regulations.

The primary concern often cited against the use of pedal-assist technology is safety. However, facts indicate that when properly regulated, pedal-assist vehicles are no more dangerous than traditional bicycles. According to a study published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the deployment of regulated pedal-assist technology shows no significant difference in accident rates compared to conventional bicycles. Furthermore, implementing strict guidelines and comprehensive operator training can significantly mitigate potential safety risks, ensuring both operators and passengers are well-protected.

By amending the current regulations to allow the use of pedal-assist technology for pedicabs in the iDrive district, we can drastically improve the sustainability and growth of this service. This change would not only benefit operators economically but also enhance the overall tourist experience by providing faster and more versatile transport options.

Join me in urging the Orange County government to reconsider the pedicab regulations and allow the integration of pedal-assist technology. Your support could make a significant difference for hundreds of operators and the economic health of our vibrant district. Please sign this petition to help us influence positive change for the iDrive pedicab community.
