Reform Ontario child support guidelines

The Issue

As a single, child support paying father, I'm striving hard to build a better future for my daughter and myself. The more I work and succeed, the higher my child support payments go, benefiting my daughter's mother more than my daughter or me. The current system in Ontario is skewed, favoring mothers without considering the vital role fathers play in their children's lives. This petition seeks to address this unfair balance and ensure equal treatment and responsibilities for both parents.

Child support payments should be a tool to truly support the child's needs without disproportionately burdening one parent over the other. Fathers have a critical and massive impact on their children's development and overall well-being, a fact that current policies seem to overlook. The guidelines must be reformed to account for the realities faced by many fathers, who are also dedicated caregivers and contributors to their children's lives.

This issue is about equality, about providing all children in Ontario an opportunity to receive meaningful support from both parents. To achieve this, we must revise the formulas and methods used to calculate support payments, considering factors like shared custody, actual living expenses, and ensuring both parents can maintain a stable and nurturing environment for their children.

In 2016, Statistics Canada reported that nearly 1 in 4 Canadian children live with a single parent, with fathers representing 20% of those parents. This demographic is significant and their needs must be as equally acknowledged and integrated into policy considerations as their counterparts.

By signing this petition, you are advocating for a balanced and fair approach to child support that benefits the children first and foremost. Stand with us in urging Ontario legislators to revisit and reform these outdated guidelines, to reflect both parents' responsibilities and contributions. Let's make a change that truly supports the best interests of our children. Sign this petition and join the call for reform.
