Reform NAU's Parking Permit Policies

The Issue

The current parking permit policies at Northern Arizona University (NAU) are overly restrictive, with students required to purchase separate permits for commuter lots, resident lots, and parking garages. This fragmented approach is not only expensive for students, but it also creates a significant administrative burden. It would be far more logical and efficient if a single permit could provide access to all these facilities.

Indeed, according to a survey conducted by the NAU Student Government, a significant number of students (67%) state that they have experienced issues with parking due to the current policies. Additionally, 72% of students agree that they would benefit from the proposed reform, with a unified permit system that covers all parking areas (NAU Student Government Survey, 2020).

The scarcity of available parking spots often forces students to park in restricted or overflow areas, leaving them vulnerable to repeated citations. As parking tickets pile up, some students may struggle to pay the fines, further exacerbating financial stress and diverting attention away from their studies. The limited parking capacity combined with strict enforcement policies creates an environment where students are penalized for circumstances beyond their control.

By reforming the current parking permit policies to allow a single permit to provide access to all parking facilities, we could alleviate financial stress on students, reduce administrative complexity, and improve overall student satisfaction. We invite everyone who recognizes these benefits to support our cause and sign this petition, encouraging NAU administration to reform their current parking permit policies.
