Montgomery Public Schools' current dress code prohibits students from wearing hoodies and cargo pants, which are popular and functional clothing options for youths. According to data from the National Center for Education Statistics, strict dress codes can harm students' self-expression and individuality, contributing to a negative impact on their mental wellbeing. Also, prohibiting cargo pants, a style that has ample pocket space, limits students' ability to comfortably carry necessary personal items. Defending the psychological health and personal comfort of our students is paramount. Montgomery Public Schools changing of the dress code rule a few weeks before school starts also negatively impacts lower income families who may have already went school shopping. We request the Montgomery Public School Board to revisit their dress code policies, with particular attention to allowing hoodies and cargo pants. This step would promote a more inclusive, practical, and less restrictive dress environment that values students' individuality and comfort.
