This summer, I've been approached countless times to speak up for the trail systems that are the lifeblood of our community and a major draw for tourists. Initially, I hesitated, preferring to avoid unnecessary attention. However, witnessing the impact on my fellow Mainers forced me to act. Our trails, originally designed for railroad tracks, have supported trains for years. Yet now, we're told we can't use them for off-road vehicles like my 2023 Defender Lone Star Crew cab. Why is that? Are we damaging these robust trails? The answer is clear: we're not.

My machine, a larger model customized from a bare chassis, is perfectly legal. It highlights the inconsistency in current regulations—why can't the same factory model, taxed and owned by many, be registered? This convoluted regulation is actually putting a financial strain on Maine. Many residents have paid taxes on prohibited machines and feel overlooked. It's not only a question of fairness but also of lost revenue. Maine is inadvertently harming its economy by imposing these restrictions.

Moreover, these restrictions deter tourists who want to enjoy Maine's natural beauty on our trails. Tourists contribute significantly to local businesses, and their reduced presence is a real economic threat. With clearer, fairer regulations, we can welcome more visitors and sustain an essential source of income for our state.

We need reform to allow sensible access to our trails while still preserving their integrity. It's time for Maine to rethink these off-road vehicle regulations. By doing so, we will ensure our trails are accessible, our economy thrives, and residents retain the freedom and enjoyment of their investments. Let's make a change that benefits all Mainers and brings vitality back to our state.
