The Issue

In 2017, I lost my mother, a devastating event that shattered my world. This pain was intensified when the local funeral director who was entrusted with donations made in memoriam of my mother, stole those precious funds. It took three painstaking years to take him to court. Ultimately, he pleaded guilty to 15 counts of theft - pilfering memorial donations from many local families between 2016 and 2021.

This tragic breach of trust is not an isolated incident. Nationally, incidents like this have occurred several times, allowing those in positions of trust to exploit bereaved families at their most vulnerable. The root cause? There are currently no laws in place to govern how funeral directors handle cash and bank donations made in memory of our beloved ones. This gaping legislative loophole has caused undue pain and anguish, and it is time for a change.

We propose a revision of the laws concerning funeral directors to include strict guidelines and penalties for mishandling or misappropriating memorial donations. We ask that robust monitoring and reporting mechanisms be established to protect families and loved ones as they navigate through their period of grief.

The loss of a loved one is hard enough without the added strain of fighting for justice in the wake of such shockingly unethical conduct. Please stand with us and demand legislative change that would protect bereaved families from enduring similar heartache.

Sign this petition today to support the installation of laws that hold funeral directors accountable for their actions and protect the rights of grieving families. Together, we can ensure that no more trust is broken and no more hearts are unnecessarily burdened.
