My only son, brother to 3 sisters, tragically lost to suicide at the age of 26 in February 2023, wished to be buried. We honored his wishes and have since referred to his grave as his home. To commemorate him, an 18"x12" granite memorial tablet was purchased for placement at the grave. However, we were informed that this does not meet the cemetery's criteria. Additionally, personal items left by family members - including those from his two-year-old daughter - have been ordered removed.

Sadly if I have to remove these items due to the rules, regulations and health and safety of the grounds men then my son will lay in an unmarked grave!!!

This is a painful experience that no grieving family should endure. The current laws and regulations regarding what is deemed acceptable for headstones and memorials are restrictive and lack clarity. They do not provide families with enough flexibility or understanding when choosing how best to remember their loved ones.

It is essential that these rules are reformed so that they better serve those who are mourning; providing clear guidelines at the time of purchasing a grave would also be beneficial in preventing such distressing situations from arising in future.

We urge lawmakers to reconsider these regulations with compassion and understanding for those who grieve; allowing them more freedom in deciding how they wish to remember their loved ones would be a significant step towards this goal.
