The Issue

At Gray Collegiate Academy, students are experiencing an unnecessary invasion of privacy due to the use of GoGuardian. As a student myself, I am deeply concerned about its intrusive nature.

Every day, I rely on my Chromebook for both educational and entertainment purposes. It is my primary means of connecting with the world, especially when I'm at home with little else to occupy my time. However, the current implementation of GoGuardian at our school feels more like a surveillance tool than a supportive educational resource.

GoGuardian extends its reach beyond the school grounds. It operates like a tracker, monitoring our activities during weekends and after school hours, which is a significant privacy concern. Such surveillance is not only invasive but also unwarranted in contexts where students should feel safe and unmonitored.

While the intent of monitoring software is to keep students focused in class and ensure their online safety, the execution here is overly aggressive. There should be a balance between oversight and respect for privacy, particularly when students are using school-issued devices at home.

I propose that Gray Collegiate Academy takes immediate steps to reform how GoGuardian is utilized. This includes: limiting surveillance to school hours and on-campus activities, providing transparency about what is being monitored, and ensuring that there's a clear policy communicated to both students and parents. Schools should foster environments of trust, not constant oversight.

Let's encourage our school administration to rethink our digital monitoring strategies to protect student privacy while still ensuring a conducive educational environment. Please, sign this petition to make a change in how GoGuardian is implemented at our school.
