Reform Gun Laws To Curb Senseless Crimes
The Issue
I am a grieving parent. My daughter was tragically taken from us due to a senseless crime in Birmingham, AL. This personal loss has made me realize the urgency of reforming gun laws in our city, and across the nation!
Birmingham has seen an alarming increase in violent crimes involving firearms over the past few years. In 2019 alone, there were 107 homicides reported, with guns being used in most cases (source: Birmingham Police Department). These are not just numbers; they represent lives lost and families shattered. Like myself, and my family lives were shattered, on December 13th of 2023. Left our hearts heavy with grief from our lost.
In 2023 alone there were 135 homicides, my daughter was number 135. In 2024 151 homicides.
And the list goes on. In Alabama and Across our nation. Continuing our communities. Around our children & families.
We need stricter gun laws to ensure that firearms do not end up in the wrong hands. We need comprehensive background checks and extended waiting periods for all gun purchases. We must also invest more resources into community programs that provide alternatives to violence and help at-risk individuals.
This petition is not about infringing on anyone's rights but about saving lives - like my daughter's - that could've been spared by sensible legislation. I'm fighting for change, not just for my daughter. But for everyone, who has lost a loved one, to senseless gun violence.
