The Issue

The need for comprehensive fire safety reforms in multi-dwelling buildings, including apartments, condos, nursing homes, and live-in treatment centers, is not just a regulatory issue but a personal one for me. I have witnessed firsthand the devastating impact of fires, where crucial minutes could have made the difference between life and death for the residents and safety for the first responders.

Current fire safety standards are inadequate, and it's time we address this issue head-on with robust solutions. I propose that all interior and exterior surfaces of such structures, except for roof shingles and windows, be coated with Class A intumescent coatings. These coatings can significantly delay the spread of fire, giving residents and first responders precious extra time to evacuate safely. Additionally, Class A penetrants should be used on all raw wood in attics and crawlspaces, providing an extra layer of protection and preventing these areas from becoming dangerous fuel sources during a blaze.

Statistics from the National Fire Protection Association indicate that an average of 15,000 people are injured and 2,500 die due to fires in multi-dwelling buildings each year in the United States alone. The loss of property and the emotional and physical scars left in the wake of these tragedies are enormous. We know that each minute saved during a fire can reduce damage by 30% and increase the chance of rescue dramatically.

A total encapsulation approach not only benefits residents but greatly enhances the safety of our brave firefighters, allowing them to conduct rescues and fight fires more efficiently. This proactive measure could prevent countless injuries and save a significant number of lives. It will also reassure residents and their families, fostering peace of mind knowing that their homes are as fire-resistant as possible.

This petition calls for the urgent reform of fire safety codes to mandate these safety improvements. Let us protect those who are most vulnerable and ensure that our multi-dwelling buildings are bastions of safety. Please add your signature to this petition and help make our communities safer for everyone. Together, we can push for these necessary changes and advocate for stronger fire safety protocols that protect lives and property alike.
