Reform Duval County Public Schools' Dress Code

The Issue

For many in our community, the current dress code in Duval County Public Schools feels oppressive, particularly for young women. This policy heavily restricts their freedom of expression - a form of personal autonomy that is fundamental to their development. Our school dress code shouldn't prey upon students by limiting how they present themselves through fashion.

Studies highlight that students perform best academically when they are comfortable, both physically and emotionally, in their learning environment. Watchful parents and educators around America have argued that strict dress codes can detract from this feeling of comfort—in extreme cases, these policies may even contribute to negative mental health outcomes among students. In Jacksonville, FL, this is the solemn reality many of our students face in Duval County Public Schools. The rate of teenagers that are committing suicide has gone up exponentially in recent years, students mental health is at a decline and preventing them from expressing themselves is never going to fix the problem.

We must align ourselves with the progressive policies that other forward-thinking districts across the United States are implementing. They have seen noteworthy improvement in student morale, creativity, and performance after reforming their dress code policies.

It is high time we catalyze this change in our community. Stand with us today to communicate this urgent need for reviewing and reforming the Duval County Public Schools dress code. Show your support by signing this petition let us ensure our children enjoy the freedom and comfort they so rightfully deserve in their educational environment.
