Reform Current U.K. E-Bike Law

The Issue

Outline.

Many thousands of people in the U.K. are restricted from using an e-bike because of weight and health reasons. The current restrictions surrounding the 250w motor and 25kph are and have never been inclusive to heavier people, a 250w electric bicycle is unlikely to assist with any real assistance anyone over 200lb plus bike weight which in real terms on the lightest of sturdy e-bikes is 25kgs in itself.

Losses.

If things stay as they are the benefits of using an e-bike are lost to a large percentage of the population, they are missing out on the exercise benefits, mental health benefits, affordable transport benefits and green vehicle benefits of being able to use an electric power assisted bicycle.

What we want.

  1. An increase of the maximum speed allowable on an e-bike increased from 25 kph to 22.5 mph.
  2. An increase in the motor size from 250w to 750w allowing heavier riders to benefit from these wonderful P.E.V. ( Personal Electric Vehicles )
  3. Compulsory wearing of a helmet for all e-bike riders.
  4. Current law to apply to 14-18 year olds.
  5. Any e-bike at the higher rate of 750w to have hydraulic brakes as standard.
  6. Anyone under 18 to undergo a C.B.T. test before being allowed to ride an e-bike at the higher 750w/22.5 mph rate.

We need to act now.

With the U.K. government’s insistence that it has green issues in its remit, e-bikes are the partial and perfect solution to helping reduce carbon emissions in the U.K. and worldwide. Help us to help you by giving you the chance to stop talking green but walking green.
