Reform Connecticut's Foster Care System Now
The Issue
My name is Tabby, and I've been sharing my personal journey to shed light on the broken foster care system in Connecticut in hope the system will listen and improve for the safety of children.
I entered foster care at just 6 months old, entrusted to a couple in Middlefield, who were meant to provide a safe and loving environment. Instead, Peter and Tammy Gable subjected me, along with the other adopted children in their home, to years of unimaginable abuse and neglect—treatment that was inflicted specifically on us as adopted children. Not their biological children.
Despite numerous complaints, the Department of Children and Families (DCF) failed to take action. They overlooked calls and warnings, allowing our suffering to continue unnoticed. This pattern of neglect isn't just my story—it's a systematic issue affecting countless children in our state. For years, children have been voiceless, their cries for help met with silence and inaction.
The abuse was horrendous. We faced food deprivation, physical punishment, and psychological manipulation. Locked rooms, screwed-shut windows, left in the garage for hours in freezing temperatures, and punishment involving the repetitive writing of Bible verses were our reality. My younger sister’s tragic death in 2021, still under a 99-year protection order from these abusers, highlights the continued failure to protect us even beyond childhood. Her body was claimed by the very people responsible for her torment, not her biological family who wanted her more than anything.
The state promised change but has yet to deliver effective solutions. We need a comprehensive reform of the foster care system in Connecticut to ensure that no more children experience this type of abuse and neglect. The current protocols are insufficient; the protection measures, just tokens without enforcement or real consequence.
Join me in calling for immediate and sweeping reforms. We must hold DCF accountable and implement strict oversight measures. Sign this petition to demand a change in laws and protocols to ensure that children's welfare is genuinely prioritized. Together, we can push for a safer, more protective foster care system in Connecticut, one that upholds the rights and dignity of every child.
