My family and many others in Marquette, Michigan and statewide using false allegations and criminal charges against low-income families, seizing their children under the guise of child welfare. Despite the lack of any abuse, neglect, or substance misuse, they remove children from loving and caring homes simply because these families rely on assistance. All too often, our children are taken from us only to be adopted by those who are not low-income, just to reduce the number of families on assistance.

Unfortunately, the focus is not always on the "best interest of the child" but rather on exploiting these children as a financial boon for those who perpetrate these separations. The very system designed to protect, often leaves genuinely endangered children in harmful situations, while removing others who are safe, loved, and protected.

The effects are devastating. Children ripped away from their families experience declines in their mental and physical health, perpetuating trauma rather than preserving their well-being. It's time for the voices of Marquette to rise together in demanding transparency and accountability in the child welfare system.

We do not accept that low-income equates to neglect or abuse. Our community deserves better, and our children deserve to be with families who love and care for them, without fear of unwarranted removal assailing their futures.
