Reform CAMHS and Accept Private Diagnoses

Reform CAMHS and Accept Private Diagnoses
The Issue
Facing the immense struggle of seeing a child in need and being unable to access immediate support is heart-wrenching. This is a reality I know all too well. My own daughter needed mental health support, and like many others, we were confronted with the harsh truth of the National Health Service (NHS) system: waiting three years for an appointment is not uncommon. Desperate for help, I took the only available route—opting for a private assessment. However, the personal and financial cost of this decision was monumental. Family finances took a toll as loans were needed for her evaluation, pushing us into a corner of financial difficulties.
CAMHS, the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services, is in dire need of reform. At present, nearly 89% of families are paying for private care out of desperation and the willingness to aid their children. Yet, the most alarming issue arises when the NHS utterly refuses to accept the diagnoses made privately. This rigid policy turns a blind eye to essential care, trapping families in a cycle of stress and helplessness, and burdening already strained social services with increased referrals.
The children suffering from these waiting times are not mere statistics; they are our future. They deserve timely and effective care. In many instances, families opting for private evaluations receive crucial diagnoses that should be recognized and treated by the NHS. Ignoring private assessments denies children prompt access to necessary care they urgently need.
This systemic problem has led to an overwhelming increase in undiagnosed conditions and forced families into untenable financial burdens. This is not just a call for help but a demand for change. Transforming CAMHS involves acknowledging the validity of private assessments and removing excruciating wait times that prevent children from receiving timely intervention.
We implore the government to act urgently to address these issues. Reform CAMHS, accept privately derived diagnoses, and ensure that no child in need is left waiting. Let's stand together for our children, the building blocks of our future, and urge immediate government action to rectify these failings. Please sign this petition to prompt the necessary changes.
