Our cause is driven by personal experiences. Many of us have friends and family who due to particular conditions such as overweight, are unable to utilize seat belts. Their discomfort is compounded by the hefty fines they're subjected to due to the existing laws mandating seat belt use. Moreover, as responsible adults, we believe it should be our decision whether to wear a seat belt or not. Given our understanding of the risks, this should be a matter of personal choice, not law enforcement's purview.

Seat belt laws were enacted to ensure safety while driving. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, seat belts saved nearly 15,000 lives in 2017 (Source: NHTSA). While we acknowledge the critical role seat belts play in road safety, this petition merely seeks to revisit the compulsory nature of wear for adults. Law enforcement resources could be significantly reallocated if adults were allowed the autonomy to make this choice. Adult individuals should have the freedom to decide to wear seat belts, provided they ensure that children under the age of 18 wear them as mandated by the law.
