Reevaluate and Reform Financial Aid Practices at Santa Fe College

Reevaluate and Reform Financial Aid Practices at Santa Fe College

The Issue

Bryce Gillingham and Jessenia Almanzar of the Future Forward Party created this petition to fight for student rights:

A student at Santa Fe College received extra financial aid in the Fall semester of 2024. Not suspecting any mistake, the student used the extra money to buy a car – a vital necessity in their life. Come 2025, Santa Fe College, attempting to fix its own mistake, employed a collections agency. The agency repossessed the student's car, negatively affecting their credit score and disrupting their life in Gainesville. This student, like many others at Santa Fe College, is getting prosecuted for an act that Santa Fe College themselves did. We must get Santa Fe College to cease the collection agencies. Students can not suffer for the College's neglect.

Sadly, this isn't an isolated incident. Over the past two academic semesters, Santa Fe College has demonstrated negligence and unfair practices, particularly concerning the distribution of financial aid. Due to its flawed execution, students have received unequal financial aid, with some receiving extra while others receiving less to none of their promised and necessary amounts. The consequences of these errors have been severe and the longer students are left without aid the worse these consequences become. Right now, there are 362 students with no financial aid from Fall 2024. We are 5 weeks into Spring 2025 and students still haven't received their promised aid for this semester. Students can't afford college without this aid. Santa Fe College has acknowledged this, but refuses to apologize and correct their mistakes, not even to faculty. If Santa Fe College won't fix this, we must make them fix this.

It is time to make a change. Santa Fe College should prioritize a transparent and equal distribution of financial aid. Furthermore, the college should assume responsibility for their mistakes, rather than pass the negative consequences on to the students like they have continued to do.

Our demand is simple: Santa Fe College must revisit their financial aid practices and they must cease the employment of collections agencies for college mistakes. They should ensure that their process is transparent, fair, and that any mistakes on their part are addressed appropriately — without unjustly placing the burden of correction on the students. If you support this, then please add your signature to our cause. Santa Fe College can not get away with its misuse of student trust and funds.
