Growing up in Litchfield, IL, my generation took immense pride in attending J.D. Colt School. Dr. John D. Colt was not just an illustrious figure in the medical community but a cornerstone of education in our town, serving diligently on the Board of Education and the City Council. The legacy of Dr. Colt is deeply interwoven with the history and development of Litchfield.

In 1863, after an honorable service in the gunboat fleet, Dr. Colt arrived in our town, despite battling health issues. Here, he carved a niche as a surgeon, contributing directly to making Litchfield a beacon of medical excellence. His passion for medicine was rivaled only by his love for the outdoors, where he found peace and inspiration with a rod and a gun during his leisure.

Dr. Colt's name on the school not only honors his professional achievements and dedication but reminds us of his community-oriented spirit and significant contributions to our town’s educational and civic fabric. His commitment left a lasting impression, touching countless lives and inspiring future generations.

As the refurbishment of the school is underway in Ward 1, restoring its original name to J.D. Colt School is imperative. By doing so, we preserve a vital piece of our local heritage and ensure the continuation of Dr. Colt's legacy in Litchfield.
