The death of George Floyd at the hands of Minnesota Police has become yet another chapter in the long history of racial injustice in this country. Though the tragedy happened 1500 miles away, people of color in Redwood City and surrounding areas are not new to the traumatic encounters with law enforcement.

The call is simple, we must alter the status quo of policing throughout the nation, beginning at the local level.

  1. Establish an advisory oversight committee.
    • Provide community members with a forum to express grievances and develop policy enhancements for the leadership of Redwood City and RCPD.
    • Conduct a series of community dialogues to provide both the community and the police department safe spaces to share grievances, comments, and concerns.
  2. Reduce the budgets of police departments and redirect funding to agencies supporting public health and restorative justice.
    • Redirecting funding to youth services, health care, and mental health services.
  3. Provide transparency for officers Personal Complaint Records surrounding the use of force and other forms of discrimination and harassment.
  4. Conduct a clear public audit of RCPD to promote comprehensive policing policy.

We expect that Redwood City will be at the forefront of addressing these systemic issues related to policing before another tragedy like George Floyd occurs within its jurisdiction.
