Farm Hill Neighborhood Association started this petition to Mayor Diane Howard and

Redwood City's new Magical Bridge Playground in Red Morton Park is an amazing place where children and families of all ages and abilities can play.

Many families who live in the surrounding neighborhoods traveling by foot, bicycle, scooter, stroller, and wheelchair use the intersection at Jefferson at Valota to get to Magical Bridge Playground. Seniors also use Valota Rd to access the Senior Center, as do residents of all ages to get to Red Morton Park, the CAB Building, the sports fields, etc.

Unfortunately, the intersection at Jefferson at Valota Rd is one of the most dangerous intersections in Redwood City. It is not uncommon for cars to drive at speeds up to 40-45 MPH on this stretch of Jefferson. There is an individual southbound turn lane onto Valota, which is a very narrow street. The dangerous conditions at this intersection are preventing many children and families from accessing the Magical Bridge Playground. Specifically, our multi-generational families and disabled community members who do not drive or own a car.

The community asks the City of Redwood City to provide safe, equitable pedestrian and wheelchair access to the Magical Bridge Playground located in Red Morton Park.

This can be achieved by doing the following:

  1. Installing flashing crosswalk lights that light up the crosswalk day or night when activated by a signal button. Redwood City has lighted crosswalks currently installed on Maple Street in front of the Kaiser Medical Center and Jefferson near the Post Office.
  2. Installing a traffic light at the intersection at Jefferson at Valota Road. Similar to the traffic light currently located at the intersection at Jefferson at Hawes, near John Gill/Orion School.

Thank you for helping ensure every member of our Redwood City community can safely access our amazing new Magical Bridge Playground in Red Morton Park.
