The Issue

As a parent of a young child immersed in the early years of schooling, I am deeply concerned about the increasing reliance on Chromebooks for education in grades K-5 in Montville, NJ, School district. What was initially perceived as an enhancement to the learning process has, in our experience, begun to unravel the foundational elements of traditional education, such as critical thinking, social interaction, and hands-on learning.

Research from organizations like the American Academy of Pediatrics suggests that excessive screen time for young children can lead to attention problems, sleep disorders, and reduced physical activity. These are crucial developmental years where children learn more effectively through hands-on activities and direct interaction with peers and teachers rather than through screens. By utilizing Chromebooks, we risk turning the classroom into a more passive environment where creativity and imagination take a back seat.

Moreover, there are health concerns associated with prolonged Chromebook usage. A study by the National Institutes of Health indicates that increased screen time can contribute to eye strain and related issues such as blurred vision and headaches. As caretakers and advocates for our children, it is our duty to prioritize their well-being and long-term health prospects over convenience and the allure of "modern" educational tools.

I propose that our school district initiate a reduction in Chromebook use for grades K-5. This can be accomplished by reintroducing traditional teaching methods and investing in tools that promote interactive and physical learning. Providing comprehensive professional development for educators can assist them in incorporating more creative and engaging methods into their teaching strategies without relying heavily on technology.

This is not an attempt to turn back time but to foster an educational environment where our children can flourish holistically. I urge the members of our school board to consider these factors seriously and take immediate steps towards a more balanced integration of technology in our schools.

Let us act now to secure a healthier, more effective educational experience for our children. Please sign this petition to support a meaningful change in our approach to technology in education.
