REDUCED SPEED LIMIT SIGNS AND ENFORCEMENT FOR STUDENT SAFETY AT DOHERTY HIGH SCHOOL

REDUCED SPEED LIMIT SIGNS AND ENFORCEMENT FOR STUDENT SAFETY AT DOHERTY HIGH SCHOOL
The Issue
I have started this petition in hopes to better protect our students at Doherty High School during arrival, pick up and open lunch.
I have edited this petition to ensure the cause is fully understood. This petition is NOT about placing blame on the City, the school or the district. They are loving caring people who have been deeply affected by this tragedy. This petition is about accountability moving forward to create better student safety in the future.
It is with great sadness that we have learned that yet ANOTHER student was hit by a car arriving at Doherty High School on March 22, 2023, and has since passed away from those injuries. Hearts in our community are broken yet AGAIN and it is PAST TIME that our community demands change; our children DESERVE to be SAFE.
We are calling upon the City of Colorado Springs, Distrct 11, and Doherty High School to take IMMEDIATE actions to better protect our children and our community; they are our future!!
Multiple students have been hit and injured or killed by automobiles outside of Doherty High School. ONE IS TOO MANY! There is currently little to no student supervision during arrival, pick up or open lunch. The speed limit is 35 mph, but speeding is a constant issue, and there are no REDUCED SPEED ZONE signs for Doherty High School, anywhere!
Students are forced into siutation where they are frequently crossing the main road in unsafe and illegal manners, and due to almost complete lack of supervision, are not held accountable by the school, law enforcement or the community. Some students are even walking across SIX lanes of traffic to get to the high school!!!
It is far past time that the Doherty High School and District 11 take immediate action and work with the City of Colorado Springs to place FLASHING REDUCED SPEED LIMIT signs on Barnes Road, from at least Oro Blanco to Barnes Road.
Colorado Springs Police Department, in coordination with the City of Colorado Springs, should not only be enforcing the speed limit for all, but also ticketing those who cross the road in unsafe/illegal manners, putting the lives of both pedestrians and motorists at risk.
I ask you to please share and sign this petition and help make our students safer. If there is ANYTHING we can do to help protect our kids, we HAVE to do it!!! ONE life taken is TOO MANY!
Our hearts break for our community and for the friends and family of the student that passed away this week from injuries sustained in getting hit outside their own school. Please pray for them as they navigate this extremely difficult time.
Thank you and please share!
