The issue

The Papakura Youth Council is urging local authorities to take immediate action to regulate the proliferation of vape shops and contain the vaping epidemic affecting the youth in our community. Vaping, once thought of as a safer alternative to smoking, has now raised concerns over its impact on young people's health, focus, and overall well-being.

Recent studies have revealed alarming statistics indicating that a significant number of young people are easily accessing vape products, often containing high levels of nicotine, from stores located disturbingly close to schools, parks, and public gathering spots. The availability of these products poses not just a health risk but also challenges the mental focus and emotional health of our rangatahi, potentially damaging their future prospects.

We call for the implementation of stricter regulations on the locations and number of vape shops in our community. Setting minimum distance requirements from sensitive areas like schools and parks will help deter young people from accessing vaping products and reduce their daily exposure to this harmful habit.

Moreover, educational campaigns targeted at young people and families about the serious and long-term consequences of vaping could greatly aid in reducing its appeal. Bringing awareness about the chemicals involved and the potential for addiction is critical in shifting perceptions around vaping.

By supporting this petition, you join us in advocating for a healthier, safer Papakura. Protecting our young generation demands urgent action, and together, we can drive the changes needed to curb the growth of vape shops and promote a more informed community. Let's stand united in this endeavor.
