The Greater Toronto Area (GTA) is home to millions of people and their beloved pets. However, it is disheartening to know that pet abandonment has become a common occurrence in the region. We believe that this issue needs urgent attention from the authorities and the community as a whole.

According to Toronto Animal Services, over 5,000 animals are abandoned every year in the city alone. This number does not include animals left on highways or rural areas outside of Toronto. The majority of these abandoned pets end up in shelters where they face an uncertain future due to overcrowding and limited resources.

Pet abandonment can have severe consequences for both animals and humans. Abandoned pets are at risk of starvation, dehydration, disease, injury, or death due to exposure to harsh weather conditions or predators. Moreover, abandoned pets can pose a threat to public health and safety by spreading diseases or causing accidents on roads.

We urge the authorities to take necessary measures such as increasing awareness campaigns about responsible pet ownership through various media channels like social media platforms like Facebook ads targeting specific demographics based on income level etc., enforcing stricter penalties for those who abandon their pets including fines up-to $10k per incident along with mandatory community service hours at local animal shelters etc., providing more resources for animal welfare organization's that help rescue abandoned animals from streets before they get hurt badly enough which could lead them into being euthanized if no one comes forward within 72 hours after being found by animal control officers etc.

As concerned students we must come together as a community and take action against this growing problem by supporting our local animal shelters through donations or volunteering time there, so they can continue providing care for these innocent pets until they find forever homes with loving families who will cherish them forever!
