Reduce the Impact of 'Securly' on Chromebooks

The Issue

As a personal testament to the issue at hand, I find that most sites are inaccessible on Chromebooks due to 'Securly'. Sometimes, one needs a break from work or study, to relax and recharge, but this is hindered by extreme site-blocking. 'Securly' is a well-intended tool designed to keep users safe online. However, a crucial aspect of responsibility is balance and currently, this balance is severely skewed.

It comes down to the fundamental belief that well-rounded digital citizens need the autonomy to navigate the internet while being educated about pertinent risks and guided to make safe choices. Wide-scale blocking is not the answer.

This issue is not isolated. Conversations within various user communities are peppered with remarks about the far-too-restrictive nature of security measures on Chromebooks. This creates an environment that is more stifling than protective.

Therefore, we are advocating for a nuanced review and subsequent modification of the security measures put into place on Chromebooks by 'Securly'. We ask companies to consider a more flexible approach that serves its purpose of protection without severely limiting access to information and causing undue stress to users.

Learning is now limited to certain websites that may not have all information to complete a project or assignment. And even if you are able to complete your assignment you wouldn't have any motivation for finishing because most games are blocked.

My suggestion is to implement a "free time mode" where non-violent games would be unblocked. Teachers could directly allow or students could ask for, on their chromebooks when their work is done. This would significantly increase motivation and morale in schools and classrooms.

Please sign this petition if you believe in a balanced approach to internet safety and would like to see changes made to the 'Securly' tool.
