Reduce the Excessive Speed Bumps and Bike Lanes in New Haven

The Issue

I am a resident of New Haven, deeply immersed and affected by changes that transpire within its streets. I've spent most of my days traversing through the city, and recently, my commute has become a struggle rather than a routine. The city’s recent infrastructure changes were ostensibly undertaken to improve the safety and convenience of residents, but they only seem to satisfy a small minority—primarily composed of privileged Ivy League students—while inconveniencing the majority.

This petition calls for New Haven's City Planning Department to acknowledge the silent majority's frustration with the excessive number of speed bumps and seemingly overzealous bike lane installation. It's undeniable that bike lanes can contribute to road safety, and a National Association of City Transportation Officials study found that bike lanes can reduce injuries by 50%. But in the case of New Haven, we must question if the current abundance is causing more harm than good.

Moreover, the large number of speed humps seems to be causing more difficulty than it's worth. AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety studies indicate that speed humps can result in longer emergency response times, car damage, and increased noise and pollution from braking and accelerating. Yet, New Haven seems to be overpopulated with them.

With this petition, we implore the city officials to re-evaluate and recalibrate this misaligned representation of priorities. We aim for a city that cares for all its residents equitably, not favoring an elite minority over others. This way, New Haven can truly embody a city that cares for its people as much as it does for its reputation. Please join me in making our voices heard. Sign this petition.
