Reduce the cost of living in the Philippines

The Issue

The cost of living in the Philippines has been on a steady rise, affecting millions of Filipinos who are already struggling to make ends meet. Factors such as increasing inflation, rising food prices, and costly utilities and services compound the everyday pressures on Filipino families, particularly those from low- to middle-income brackets.

In recent years, inflation rates in the Philippines have reached alarming levels, with the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) reporting inflation peaking at 6.9% in 2022. Such high inflation rates have exacerbated the financial burdens on household budgets and led to a decrease in purchasing power. The increase in prices of essential goods, like rice, which forms a staple in the Filipino diet, further aggravates the problem.

Moreover, electricity prices in the Philippines are among the highest in Southeast Asia. According to a report by the IFC, Philippine households may pay nearly double the rates of neighboring countries. This presents a significant challenge, particularly for families living below the poverty line.

To address these pressing issues, we propose measures such as:

1. Implementing more effective price control mechanisms on essential commodities to prevent undue price hikes.
2. Encouraging investment in infrastructure that supports renewable energy, potentially reducing reliance on expensive imported fuels and lowering electricity costs.
3. Providing subsidies or financial assistance to low-income families to help alleviate their financial stress.
4. Reforming policies that currently hinder agricultural productivity, ensuring that farmers have the support needed to increase local food supply and stability.

We call on the government, industry leaders, and stakeholders to take immediate action to implement these solutions, and to work towards creating a more sustainable and affordable living environment for all Filipinos. Sign this petition to demand change and help build a future where the cost of living is no longer a barrier to a decent quality of life.
