The Issue

On March 3, 2026, I was crossing the street near NRG stadium when I was struck by an 18-wheeler truck. Despite being on a crosswalk with a crosslight, the truck failed to reduce its speed in time, and I barely escaped with my life. This unfortunate incident is not an isolated event in Houston; since my accident, countless people have shared their own harrowing tales of "close calls" and senseless fatalities on our roads.

The problem is glaringly evident on North and South Braeswood Blvds, where speeding is rampant. These roads are crucial arteries in our community, connecting residents to the Braeswood Trails, bus routes, and public spaces. Despite their importance as pedestrian thoroughfares, they are plagued with dangerously high-speed vehicles. Every day, residents and visitors alike are put at risk simply walking these sidewalks due to the excessive speeding.

Research has repeatedly shown that reducing speed limits can significantly decrease the severity and likelihood of road accidents. By lowering the speed limit to 25mph on these roads, we can create a safer environment for everyone—pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the chance of a pedestrian dying if hit by a vehicle increases dramatically with speed. At 40mph, the risk of fatality is much higher than at 20-25mph, where the chances of survival improve significantly.

Houston has the potential to join other major cities that have prioritized pedestrian safety by implementing stricter speed limits. Consider cities like New York and Boston, where reduced speed limits have led to a measurable decrease in pedestrian accidents and fatalities. It's time for us to follow suit for the safety of our community.

We urge city officials to take immediate action and amend the speed regulations for North and South Braeswood Blvds. Implement lower speed limit signs (less than 25mph), more crosswalks, and enforce strict penalties for violators. These measures will help ensure that our streets are safe for everyone who uses them.

Sign this petition to demand safer streets in Houston. Let us protect ourselves, our families, and our neighbors from preventable tragedies. Together, we can make North and South Braeswood Blvds safer for everyone. Please sign and share this petition to make your voice heard.
