Reduce speed limit to 30 kph in Storey’s beach, Port Hardy.
The Issue
As a concerned resident of the Storey's Beach neighbourhood in Port Hardy, BC, I am deeply worried about the safety of our streets. My toddler often plays outside, along with many other children in the area, where there are no sidewalks to ensure their safety. The current speed limit is too high, and vehicles frequently speed through our neighbourhood. Each day, I fear for our children's safety, deeply concerned that an accident could happen.
Our neighbourhood is a vibrant community with families who enjoy the close-knit environment and the freedom to relax outdoors. However, without sidewalks and with vehicles moving at high speeds, this freedom feels threatened. The streets where our children play and people walk their dogs, should not feel dangerous.
Reducing the speed limit to 30 kph is a practical solution that will help protect our children and other pedestrians. Many studies have shown that lower speed limits significantly reduce the risk of accidents and increase the reaction time for drivers, providing them with a better chance to avoid collisions. According to Parachute Canada, an organization dedicated to injury prevention, reducing vehicle speed by as little as 5 kph can reduce the risk of pedestrian fatalities by up to 30%.
We urge the Port Hardy council to take immediate action by installing new 30 kph speed limit signs throughout the Storey's Beach neighbourhood. This simple change can make a massive difference in ensuring the safety and peace of mind for residents and especially the children who deserve a safe place to play.
Please join me in making our community safer for everyone. Sign this petition to call for a reduced speed limit in Storey's Beach. Together, we can make sure our streets are safe for our families and our future.
