The Issue

Losing a beloved pet is heart-wrenching, especially when it happens in a preventable accident. For many in our community, this tragic loss became all too real when my neighbour’s pet recently lost its life on Scaynes Hill Road, Walstead, Lindfield. This road, once a quieter passage, has seen a significant rise in traffic due to residential developments, making safety a growing concern for all of us.

With over 200 new homes at Walstead Park and an additional 90 at the upcoming Scamps Hill development, the sheer volume of vehicles turning onto and off Scaynes Hill Road has made accessing this road during peak hours not only stressful but perilous. The current speed limit of 40mph grossly underestimates the safety needs of our community, pets, and pedestrians alike.

A reduction in the speed limit to 30mph isn't just a number—it's a measure to preserve life and ensure the safety of both humans and animals. According to Transport for London, reducing speed limits to 30mph can lower the risk of accidents by up to 40%. It's a tried and tested step towards a safer road for every one of us who calls this area home.

Moreover, given the increased residential occupancy stemming from these new developments, it's time we adapt our infrastructure to these changes. Authorities should act proactively by installing improved road signage and exploring the use of speed cameras or humps that effectively deter speeding and increase driver awareness.

Your voice matters to make this change. By signing this petition, you’re advocating for our community’s safety, and urging decision-makers to rethink and reduce the speed limit on Scaynes Hill Road. Let's ensure that tragedies like the loss of a beloved pet are prevented in the future. Sign today to support a safer environment for everyone.
