Reduce speed limit on north highway 101 for safety
The Issue
In our scenic area along North Highway 101 between Garibaldi and Barview, safety has become a pressing issue that cannot be ignored any longer. Recently, a house on the east side of North 101 was severely damaged when a car veered off the road and crashed into it, dislodging it from its foundation. Such incidents highlight the dire need for immediate action to enhance safety on this stretch of road. Every day, residents attempting to turn into their driveways face the danger of being rear-ended or hit from the side. It's not just the local residents facing the risk; pedestrians visiting local attractions, like Three Graces, frequently cross the highway or walk alongside it, adding another layer of urgency to the situation.
To address these pressing concerns, we are urgently requesting the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) to implement the following safety measures on Highway 101 from approximately mile post 54.8 to 53.5, covering the section from Pirate's Cove past Barview intersection. **First**, we urge ODOT to reduce the speed limit to 35 mph. Lowering the speed limit will provide drivers with more reaction time, reducing the likelihood of crashes and the severity of injuries if accidents do occur. **Second**, we request that this entire stretch be made a no-passing zone. A no-passing zone will minimize head-on collisions, which often result in catastrophic outcomes.
Lastly, there is an urgent need for strict enforcement of these speed regulations. We recommend the installation of flashing speed limit signs that show current speed vs. limit and propose Sheriff monitoring and ticketing of speed violators 3-4 times a week, with focused attention on weekday mornings and weekends when traffic is heaviest.
These changes not only promise to reduce the risk of property damage and personal injury but also ensure peace of mind for both the residents and visitors to this region. Our community's safety should be a priority, and with your support, we can make this necessary change happen.
Sign this petition today to demand that ODOT prioritize safety measures on Highway 101. Together, we can advocate for a safer road for everyone.
