Reduce Speed Limit on Heydenreich Road, Macomb Twp, MI for student safety
The Issue
Recently the Dakota family has suffered a tragic loss. Victoria Cartwright lost her life the morning of Friday, November 4th when she was hit by a car on her way to school at Dakota High School in Macomb Township. Many are mourning her untimely loss and celebrating her short life. Many are also calling for change.
The current speed limit on the stretch of Heydenreich between 21 and 22 Mile Roads is 50mph, and reduced during school hours. This creates a very unsafe environment for the students of the 5 schools in that area who rely on walking and crossing Heydenreich to arrive safely at school. There are areas of this road where the sidewalks don't connect on a high-volume road. Those conditions coupled with early start times and dark mornings leave these students unnecessarily vulnerable. Reducing the posted speed limit to 35mph at all times is absolutely needed now.
Retired Macomb County Sheriff, Charles Missig, agrees a reduced speed would be a valuable change that can be enacted quickly to increase safety in that area. Many parents have also expressed their concern for area improvements for the well-being of our student pedestrians.
Please sign and share today to show your support for the Cartwright family, in memory of Victoria, and for the students who will walk the path she did that tragic morning.
With enough signatures, we can make a change!
Thank you.
