The Issue

The A449 road from Hawford to Ombersley has seen too many accidents and near-misses in recent years, and as someone who travels this path daily, this issue is personal to me and countless others in our community. The absence of the previously demolished speed camera has only increased the risk, as vehicles often exceed safe speeds, turning this stretch into a dangerous zone for drivers and pedestrians alike.

The statistics speak for themselves: in the past year alone, there have been numerous accidents causing injuries and significant distress to families. According to a report by the Local Road Safety Authority, over 200 reported incidents have occurred in the last two years, with excessive speed being a major contributing factor.

By reducing the speed limit to 50 mph and reinstating the speed camera, we can drastically improve safety. Even a small reduction in speed can significantly decrease the risk and severity of collisions. According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), reducing speed by just 10% can reduce casualties by more than 30%.

Implementing these measures will not only protect drivers but also the pedestrians and cyclists who use this route daily. It will provide a safer environment for our kids who travel to school and ensure peace of mind for everyone residing in or passing through our community.

We urge the local council and the transport authorities to take immediate action and make our roads safer. Sign this petition to demand a reduced speed limit and the restoration of the speed camera on the A449. Together, we can prevent further accidents and safeguard lives.
