As the parent of two elementary-aged students and one just starting middle school in the Corona-Norco Unified School District, Riverside County, California, I have seen the detrimental effects of excessive screen time and computer-based homework on my children’s education. The district-issued devices, though intended to enhance learning, frequently lead to more harm than good. They give our children unprecedented access to websites like YouTube, making it difficult for parents to monitor the content their children consume. Within classrooms, these devices often diminish students' attention spans and increase their distractibility, counteracting the very educational benefits they are supposed to provide.

When kids are constantly plugged into their devices, it becomes challenging for teachers to retain their focus on the subject matter. The allure of videos and internet access draws them away from the valuable interactions that traditional classroom instruction provides. Research shows that excessive screen time can impair physical health, lead to anxiety and depression, and affect sleep patterns. According to a study by the American Academy of Pediatrics, children ages 8-18 are already consuming more than 7 hours of entertainment media per day—a startling statistic that only worsens with remote learning and increased screen dependence.

While technology can be an excellent tool when used appropriately, it should not replace the vital role of teachers and human interaction in education. Our students learn best when they can engage directly with their educators and classmates, developing critical social skills and absorbing lessons more effectively. In addition, numerous studies have shown that traditional methods of learning can lead to better retention and understanding of material compared to digital methods.

We urge the Corona-Norco Unified School District to revise its approach to technology in the classroom. Limit screen time and computer-based homework to create a balanced educational environment. Encourage more face-to-face instruction, physical textbooks, and hand-written assignments to ensure our children receive a comprehensive education that caters to their developing minds.
