The Issue

Growing up, I have often seen school as more than just an institution for academics. It has been a sanctuary, offering a respite from the challenging situations at home. I am not alone in this sentiment; many students view school as a haven where they can engage in positive social interactions, participate in extracurricular activities, and pave the way towards their aspirations of attending college and eventually gaining independence.

For numerous students, home is not the restful and nurturing environment that we might hope it to be. Instead, school represents a stable and predictable environment where they can focus on their future, away from the troubles that burden them at home. Reducing the number of unnecessary school day offs can significantly benefit those students for whom school is a refuge. It will ensure that these students have more consistent access to education and a structured setting where they can thrive.

Having too many days off from school disrupts the continuity of learning and can foster a lack of motivation and disinterest in education. Studies have shown that excessive breaks lead to a decrease in academic performance due to the disruption of routine and the need to re-acclimate to school after extended breaks. By reducing the number of school day offs, we can offer a more stable educational journey, which is crucial for long-term academic success.

Additionally, maintaining a regular school schedule aligns with parental working hours, reducing the need for additional child care and ensuring safety for students during the day. For some students, school-provided meals could be their most reliable source of daily nutrition; frequent days offs could jeopardize this essential provision.

We ask local education authorities and school boards to consider the emotional, social, and academic implications of frequent school day-offs. Let us prioritize the well-being and future of our students by reducing non-essential breaks, thereby providing them with consistent opportunities to learn, grow, and prepare for their future successes.
